The Genocide Education Project is introducing a new annual award to honor the outstanding performance of teachers who have implemented unique and innovative lesson plans about the Armenian Genocide into their curriculum.

 

Founded in 1997, The Genocide Education Project is the only organization in the country devoted entirely to bringing the history of the Armenian Genocide into U.S. classrooms.

 

The mission of The Genocide Education Project is to help prevent genocide by assisting educators, students, and educational organizations with teaching and learning about genocide and other major human rights violations, with specific focus on the Armenian Genocide.

  Award:  
 
  • Resources on the Armenian Genocide for the educator and his/her institution’s library

  • $500 awarded to the educator

  • Publication of the lesson plan on www.TeachGenocide.com

 
  Purpose:
To identify and provide recognition for an outstanding educator who has implemented lessons on the history of the Armenian Genocide in her/his curriculum.
 
     
  Eligibility:  
 
  • The educator must have used the lesson plan in the past year in the United States

  • The focus of the lesson plan should be the history of the Armenian Genocide

  • Eligibility is open to educators who teach secondary level students

 
 

Award Criteria:

An exemplary lesson plan submission should include:

 
 
  • Evidence of both scholarship and expertise in the subject

  • Evidence of participation in all aspects of the development of the lesson plan, including setting goals and objectives, as well as implementation and evaluation

  • Sound instructional theory and practice in the implementation of the lesson

  • A variety of systematic and valid measures to evaluate student performance

  • Valid evidence that the outcome of the lesson is consistent with the stated goals and objectives

 
 

Entry Requirements:

Two sets of the following materials (one original and one copy, each bound with labeled subject dividers)

 
 
  • Cover Page

  • Professional résumé or Vita

  • Abstract of the lesson plan, maximum 75 words

  • Lesson plan description (approximately five pages describing goals, objectives, teaching strategies, assessments, and lesson implementation)

  • Letter of support (at least one letter from any of the categories below):
    * Principal or other on-site program supervisor

    * Social Studies curriculum/program coordinator

    * Letter from student, parent, community leader or organization

 
 
  • Lesson Plan (which includes all of the categories below)
    * Goals           
    * Objectives
    * Prerequisites

    * Objectives

    * Lesson Procedure
    * Assessment/Evaluation

 
 
  • Evidence (can include all or some of the following items)
    * Samples of student work

    * Newspaper articles

    * Video tape of lesson implementation

 
  Submission Deadline: Postmarked June 1, 2008
